The Memory Café at the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon provides a facility where those living with dementia and their carers, friends and families can meet, talk and join in with activities with other people, as well as an opportunity to speak to support workers, medical practitioners, advisors etc for information and help.
The sessions take part in the lower foyer of the Wyvern Theatre, Swindon on Monday 4th April, Monday 6th June and Monday 4th July from 10.30am to 12pm.
“I think that the Wyvern running a Memory Café is very good,” says David Baddiel, comedian & Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador. “When someone has dementia, you’ve got to remember there’s still a real person there, not just a stereotype of someone looking at the wall with a blanket on their knees. There’s a 360 degree person in there and having Memory Café’s and not just storing them away somewhere is a very good thing.”
“I welcome any forum that gives people the chance to discuss dementia and what it can mean to people living with the condition as well as their family and friends,” says Jamie Smith, Projects & Development Director at Coate Water Care, a family-run business that manages nine residential care homes in Swindon, Wiltshire, Gloucester, Warwickshire and Worcestershire.
Research shows there are more than 850,000 people in the UK who have dementia. One in 14 people over the age of 65 have dementia, and the condition affects 1 in 6 people over 80.The number of people with dementia is increasing because people are living longer. It is estimated that by 2025, the number of people with dementia in the UK will be more than 1 million.
It’s normal for your memory to be affected by stress, tiredness, certain illnesses and medicines. But if you’re becoming increasingly forgetful, particularly if you’re over the age of 65, it’s a good idea to talk to a GP about the early signs of dementia.
Memory loss can be annoying if it happens occasionally, but if it’s affecting your daily life, or it’s worrying you, or someone you know, you should get help from a GP.
